The return of the interview meme!
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond (eventually) by asking you five questions.
3. You post the answers & questions on your journal.
4. You include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else.
5. Add meme perpetuation line, etc.

I got questions from [info]threewalls.

1.Do you feel differently about writing from an open/ongoing canon as opposed to a closed canon?

Sometimes yes! It depends on the canon; there are some ongoing canons I can't or don't want to write from at all because I just don't know enough yet, and yet, here I am writing Saiyuki all the time. But it is definitely something I think about-- whenever I write a Saiyuki backstory I have to be ready and willing to be Jossed, and I have been more than once. I also sometimes 'close' canon myself and make things AU from X point, though I don't think I've done that for...lol, years.

2. Remember when you started writing/posting fan fiction? What would the you-then find different about your fandom experience now?

You're posting labels and warnings? You're not the only person in your fandom writing gay people? WHAT'S WITH ALL THE INCEST? And honestly, I think my past self would be surprised I'd stuck with it as long as I have; I'm a 'pick up a hobby and drop it' type, usually.

The only thing I think my past self would be disappointed with is that my experience of fandom is much more insular that it used to be-- I sort of play within my own circles now. I miss being kind of new and different and genre-bending.

3. What are your views on yaoi TMNT sexuality?

The first gay fan character I ever wrote was Donatello. So...I guess that's your answer? I think they should be allowed to have lives and girlfriends or boyfriend (or both, I see you there, Raph). I think the incest is faintly ridiculous because it's so far from what normally happens in these situations-- I have people who have incest ships on my flist, they're fine people, but it's not my kink and this is not Flowers in the Attic, lolz. I'd rather pair them up with people already in canon or-- gasp!-- OCs. (My old bulletproof ships: one-sided Raph/April, Leo/Karai, Leo/Renet. Wait, these are still my bulletproof ships.)

4. Tell me about what makes one or two of your favourite characters of colour so awesome.

I will pick two because I can! First is Scar, from Fullmetal Alchemist, who's Ishbalan. (The Ishbalans are similar to Arabic Muslims, but in a 'cultural parallel' way rather than a 'hey, let me rip off these guys' way, which is something else I appreciate.) Scar starts out as a very scary dude, and pretty much remains a very scary dude, but as the series continues we get more and more of his story and reasoning. I've always enjoyed his character, but I enjoy him for very different reasons now than I did at first.

And second is Angela Montenegro from Bones, who is mixed-race, openly bisexual (and allowed to have relationships with men and women, yay!). She's the 'feeling' member of a very scientifically-oriented team, but they respect her for the different perspective she brings, and she's never treated as the stupid member of the group. She's smart and savvy and the lead character's best friend, and their relationship is treated less as an opposites-attract oddity than as two strong, smart women supporting one another. (She gets some really good lines, too.)

5. Have you ever become unexpectedly deeply invested in a character that wasn't your type at all?

Oh yes. I don't think of Gat, or example, as my normal type of character-- I'm far more drawn to 'mouthy and short' than 'strong and silent,' but man, he got to me right away. It didn't hurt that he was hot. And visibly smarter than Hazel. I can't think of anyone else but I'm sure there's someone...

Let me know if you want questions!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? 3. Your favorite American TV show. 4. If you woke up in the Saiyuki-verse, where would you end up? What would you end up doing? 5. Cake or pie?
